John Lewis Casts First Vote Since Cancer Diagnosis

Rep. John Lewis, 79, of Atlanta returned to the House floor Friday to cast his vote with Democrats.

ATLANTA, GA — It was business as usual for Atlanta congressman and civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis, who was on the House floor Friday morning, reports WSB-TV. He was present to cast his vote with Democrats for a resolution that would limit President Donald Trump’s power to initiate war against Iran. Lewis’ appearance comes less than two weeks since announcing his stage four pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

Following a routine medical visit, the congressman recently learned that he has cancer. He said last month that he planned to return soon to Washington, D.C., to begin treatment and resume work on Capitol Hill.

His first words entering the chamber: “Good to be back,” according to WSB.

The Democrats resolution was brought on by Trump’s authorization of killing top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in an U.S. airstrike. That action led to Iran firing missile strikes at bases of U.S. troops in Iraq. on Tuesday.

There were no casualties, according to several reports. On Thursday, "No War with Iran Day of Action" rallies were held simultaneously in Decatur, Marietta and Norcross. The protestors are opposing the possibility of a war after the recent events between the U.S. and Iran have created rising tension.
