The dog, who officers have named Smokey, is now a available for adoption, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

ATLANTA, GA — A lucky dog caught in an apartment fire in Atlanta was rescued by police officers and, now, is looking for a new home.

The Atlanta Police Department this week shared video of the rescue, which happened Jan. 7 at an abandoned apartment building at Mayson Turner Road and Joseph E. Boone Boulevard. As officers were responding to the fire, the saw the dog — who they have named Smokey — laying unresponsive on a porch.

Officer Robert Winkler, whose body camera caught images of the rescue, quickly pulled Smokey to safety as flames poured from the building's roof and thick, gray smoke billowed everywhere. Officer Austin Denninger carried him further away from the fire. Another officer called in senior Officer Amy Soeldner, the department's animal cruelty liaison.

In the video, Soeldner can be seen wrapping Smokey in her coat because he was shaking, while Jesse Johnson, an EMT from Grady Memorial Hospital, gives him oxygen. After he was resuscitated, Smokey was taken to a veterinary hospital overnight.

"We are so incredibly proud of the compassion and love our officers showed for this animal, thank you," the department said in a social media post. "We also thank the firefighters with Atlanta Fire Rescue and Grady’s emergency responders for helping save Smokey."

After getting lucky and being found by some caring first-responders, he's now looking for his forever home. Smokey is up for adoption through Fulton County Animal Services' LifeLine Animal Project.

His rescue came just four days after other metro Atlanta first-responders made national news with a heroic fire rescue. Several children, including a 5-year-old girl and a newborn, were saved by DeKalb County firefighters in a Decatur blaze on Jan. 4 during which parents were forced to drop their children several stories into the arms of the firefighters.
