Showers Forecast For Metro Atlanta A Week After Severe Thunderstorms

Weather officials told Patch Thursday's showers are not expected to be as severe as the storms on Jan. 12.

ATLANTA, GA — Metro Atlanta can expect a line of showers to come through the area Thursday, but meteorologists with the National Weather Service say the rain will not be as severe as a week ago when storms spewed multiple tornadoes.

Samuel Marlow, a meteorologist with the NWS Peachtree City Office, told Patch the line of broken showers could start as early as Wednesday night but the rain will primarily be present around 6 a.m. Thursday.

"We’re just really looking at kind of a wet set-up the next few days," he said.

The wet weather is coming from the northwest and is heading southeast, he said.

Marlow confirmed there should not be any severe thunderstorms and said rain in the metro area should not reach a quarter inch.

"There may be a rumble of thunder here and there," he said.

Once the showers pass Thursday, temperatures are forecast to dip slightly and a brief dry period is possible through Saturday afternoon, Marlow said.

The rainy weather comes while parts of metro Atlanta are still recovering from the tornadoes that resulted from the Jan. 12 thunderstorms.

Multiple tornadoes hit Griffin-Spalding, including an EF-3 tornado, weather officials confirmed.

Georgia emergency management officials confirmed a 5-year-old boy in Jackson died as a result of the storms and tornadoes.

President Joe Biden declared Tuesday a major disaster declaration for Georgia, allowing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to allocate federal disaster assistance to Georgians.

Funding is available to residents in Butts, Henry, Jasper, Meriwether, Newton, Spalding and Troup counties, according to FEMA.

The funding consists of grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans for uninsured property losses and other programs.

Information about how to apply for the FEMA assistance is available here.
