Brief Standoff With Suspect in Rape, Child Molestation: Police

Suspect in custody after located at a McDonough area hotel, according to Spalding County Sheriff's Office.

GRIFFIN, GA — Stephen Keith Spires was arrested early Sunday morning at a Spalding County hotel on charges including rape and child molestation.

The arrest was made at about 2:30 a.m. at the Scottish Inn in McDonough by McDonough Police Department officers and Spalding County Sheriff's Office deputies.

"The arrest followed a brief standoff when Spires initially refused to exit the hotel room to surrender to law enforcement personnel," Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam said in a news release.

Spires, 31, eventually surrendered without incident, Beam said.

He is being held in Spalding County Detention Center on the following charges: child molestation, aggravated child molestation, statutory rape, sexual battery, sodomy and incest.

Spires' girlfriend, 19-year-old Carmen Clay, was arrested on charges of interference with custody.
