Tornado Watch Issued For Metro Atlanta: Tropical Storm Fred

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado water for much of northeast and central Georgia as Tropical Storm Fred enters the state.

ATLANTA, GA — As Tropical Storm Fred crosses over the state line, much of central and northeast Georgia are under a tornado watch through 1 p.m. on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Fred will move north across the forecast area today accompanied by widespread showers and thunderstorms. Heavy rain with possible flooding and gusty winds will be the main threats across the area, with also a few tornadoes possible mainly central Georgia, the NWS said.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for much of the area through Wednesday morning.

Rainfall associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred will continue to move north across portions of north Georgia through this afternoon. Many locations have already received anywhere from two to four inches of rainfall. A total of two to three inches of additional rain is expected across North Georgia, with isolated heavier amounts. Heavy rainfall on top of saturated soils will lead to flash flooding.

  • Big Creek near Alpharetta, affecting Fulton and Forsyth counties
  • North Fork Peachtree Creek near Atlanta affecting DeKalb and Fulton counties
  • Crooked Creek near Norcross affecting Gwinnett and Fulton counties

Additionally, a wind advisory continues for much of central Georgia through today.

After Wednesday, Georgians can expect mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.

Tuesday

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 4 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. High near 77 degrees. East wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between 2-3 inches possible.

Tuesday night

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69 degrees. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 1 mph.

Wednesday

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 87 degrees. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Wednesday night

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72 degrees. Southwest wind around 5 mph.

Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Partly sunny, with a high near 88 degrees. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
