Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:

  1. Former President Donald Trump will host a "Save America Rally" in Commerce today. The current Republican candidates or politicians who have been announced to speak at the event include former Sen. David Perdue, who is campaigning for the governor's seat, former Georgia Bulldogs star and current U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker and Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Andrew Clyde and Jody Hice, who is running against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. The rally will be held at the Banks County Dragway, with the program scheduled to start at 4 p.m. (OnlineAthens.com)
  2. The Fulton County Sheriff's Office is holding a job expo today, with plans to recruit detention officers and deputy sheriffs. And the agency is offering a $9,000 signing bonus for a three-year commitment. Applicants should go to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, 545 Hill St. SE in Atlanta, from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. with the required paperwork. A fitness exam will also be involved. 3. It's spring festival time in metro Atlanta, and there's fun aplenty to be had. Today, for instance, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are performing at 4:30 p.m. at the Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival. And more festival revelry is planned throughout April and May. (CBS 46 News)
  4. If this is the weekend you've decided to add a furry companion to your family, Patch can help. With a little help from our friends at Petfinder, we round up a list each week of all the pets recently put up for adoption at Atlanta-area shelters. If you prefer dogs, you might like Milo, an Australian Shepherd up for adoption. Or, if you're inclined to own cats, there are several great felines available, too. (Atlanta Patch)
  5. The newest COVID-19 subvariant - BA.2 - has been detected in Georgia, arriving after state and local governments lifted the last remaining pandemic restrictions. But experts say the new strain of virus should not cause a surge because most states have a high level of immunity. The Washington Post reported the BA.2 subvariant is the strain behind about 70 percent of new infections in many parts of the country, according to an estimate from the genomics company Helix. Check out the Atlanta Patch's five things to know about the subvariant's presence in the Peach State. (Atlanta Patch)

This handsome young chap is incredibly loving and is available for adoption through Lifeline! He's about 9 months old, has gorgeous light blue eyes, and needs a caring home that's ready to welcome in lots of cuddles and licks after he spent some time as a stray. He is very sweet-tempered and has done well with other dogs. He has not been around children in his foster home, but we don't anticipate him having any issues, given how sweet he is. Please let me know if you are interested in meeting Claude or want to learn more about him! And if you see us walking around the neighborhood with his bright yellow 'Adopt Me' leash, please come say hello!" (Nextdoor)
