A Resident's Perspective: Wildcats Undefeated, City Boasts Only Regulation Ball Fields in County

The Auburn Wildcats played their first season with a perfect record and beat out several teams from surrounding counties to win their tournament.

With standing room only, Councilman Bob Vogel started the public portion of the Auburn City Council's November business meeting by recognizing the Auburn Wildcats — an Auburn Dixie Youth 13 and 14 boys team — for a perfect season.

Not only did the boys win 20 consecutive games, they also went on to win the tournament. The tournament was played at the Parks Mill baseball field. Coach Ken Duym addressed the council and residents present, boasted the team’s performance.

Vogel and Duym both pointed out the controversy surrounding the new ball fields in Auburn — the only regulation field in Barrow County. The tournament was completed Wednesday, Nov. 2, and included teams from several counties — 17 from Gwinnett County.

For the entire month of October the team wore pink socks in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, " ... and that’s something to speak of, a bunch of 13 to 14 year-old boys to do that," Duym said.

Duym thanked the council and the city for its support and the parents and team members for a great season.

The city has worked diligently to provide these balls fields, at times with controversy. These fields are available for the public, traveling teams and the community. In spite of the current economic conditions, this is another example of Auburn's obsessive focus on the future — without raising taxes or incurring more debt.

The city can now boast having the only regulation ball fields in the county, as well as being home to an undefeated team.
