Outdoor Burn Ban Now in Effect

Residents are prohibited from burning debris through Sept. 30.

An outdoor burn ban is now in effect for Barrow County.

The ban, which covers Barrow and other metro Atlanta counties, went into effect May 1 and will continue through Sept. 30.

“This ban is issued by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division every year," Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for , said in a news release. “We want citizens to be aware of this and help us all have a safer and clearer summer.”

The state Environmental Protection Division imposes a ban on outdoor burning to comply with Federal Clean Air Regulations. During the summer months in Georgia, the ozone in the air can reach unhealthy levels and open burning has been identified as a significant contributor of the pollutants that form ozone.
