Lottie Scott honored as Y volunteer of year

Lottie Scott of Atlanta is the 2013 Volunteer of the Year  at the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead. Her work will be honored at the annual volunteer recognition dinner Monday, November 4, 2013.

“I began coming to the Y twice a week with a group of seniors and decided to get more involved,” says Scott. “I volunteer as part of CATCH, a program in partnership with the Atlanta Regional Commission that trains senior volunteers to work with children and teach healthy eating habits.”

CATCH stands for Coordinated Approach to Child Health and is an intergenerational, evidence-based program designed to promote activity and healthy food choices among the volunteers and the children they serve. By teaching children that eating healthy and being physically active every day can be fun, CATCH has proven that establishing healthy habits in childhood can promote behavior changes that last a lifetime.

“Volunteering with CATCH is beneficial for my own health, too,” says Scott. “I want to serve as an example for these kids by following the same healthy habits as I teach.”

“Lottie knows that spending time one-on-one makes children feel special and important,” says Kristin McEwen, executive director of the Sanders Y in Buckhead. “She is excited to serve as a role model and positive example. Lottie never misses an opportunity to work with the children in the after-school program.”
