Buford Native Nominated for 'Good Works' Team

Now at Mercer, John Russ is in the running for the AllState American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.

A Buford native has been nominated for the AllState American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.

John Russ, a quarterback at Mercer University, is one of 182 nominated for the award, called the most prestigious off-the-field honor in college football. Russ, who played at Mill Creek High School, is majoring in sports management.

  • Speaking to students at local elementary schools about the importance of education.
  • Participating as a member of the Backpack Ministry at Forest Hills United Methodist where he stuffs backpacks with food for underprivileged students without lunch.
  • Volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House at the city’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

The 22 winners — 11 from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 from smaller divisions — will be named in September.
