The Rios family was moving into the rental house and were apparently mistaken as burglars, the TV station reported. They were not home when police arrived.

According to the Gwinnett Police incident report, the officer was bitten in the thigh area after he entered the garage. There were no puncture wounds, but there were holes left in the officer’s pants, the incident report said.

Rocky and another pit bull named Scrappy were taken to Gwinnett Animal Control, WSB Radio reported, adding that a note was left by authorities saying the dogs were removed. Scrappy was not injured.

“I don’t know why they did this to me. Now I’m afraid to go back to the house,” Karen Rios told WSB.

Channel 2 reported police said the shooting was justified because the dog had attacked. The agency had not assigned a detective to the case, the TV station reported.
