2 Injured In 3-Vehicle Crash In Canton

The crash also resulted in a gas leak, which forced crews to shut down a portion of I-575 southbound late Thursday morning.

CANTON, GA — Two people were transported to an area hospital Thursday morning after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 575 in Canton. The Georgia State Patrol and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the accident on the southbound side just south of exit 14.

Crews arrived to find a tractor trailer truck and two passenger cars involved in the crash. According to the Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Tracey Watson, troopers arrived at the scene around 11:21 a.m. to find a Chrysler 200 had rear-ended a Nissan Altima.

The driver of the Altima, Watson said, said she was traveling at "approximately 10 to 20 miles per hour in the right travel lane" when it was hit by the Chrysler. The Altima rotated counterclockwise and collided with the passenger’s side of a tractor trailer, Watson added.

The tractor trailer, Cherokee County fire added in its press release, suffered a ruptured gas tank following the collision, which promoted the Cherokee Hazardous Materials Team to also respond to the accident.

Cherokee County fire Sgt. Michael Sims said about 10 gallons of fuel spilled onto the ground, and the team was able to contain the leak in a short amount of time. Firefighters also had to shut down this portion of the interstate due to the gas leak.

Two people inside a Nissan Altima were transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for treatment, and Sgt. Sims said both patients were reportedly in stable condition. The driver of the Chrysler 200 and truck were not transported, said Cherokee County fire spokesperson Tim Cavender. The Georgia State Patrol said the driver of the Altima was cited for impeding the flow of traffic.

No other injuries were reported.
