Alleged Purse Snatching Crew Arrested In Canton

The Canton Police Department said the three suspects were "preying upon unsuspecting shoppers."

CANTON, GA -- Three Canton residents have been charged in connection to at least two purse snatching incidents reported at local stores. The trio, the Canton Police Department said, had been "preying on unsuspecting shoppers" by removing purses from the shopping carts of women who were "distracted" while perusing store aisles.

Detectives began investigating the incidents after a report of a purse taken on Sunday, Oct. 29 at Publix at 1451 Riverstone Parkway. These officers were able to identify the subjects based on witness descriptions of them as well as their vehicle. The investigation also revealed the trio were "also committing various other crimes in surrounding jurisdictions," the police department said.

On Nov. 1, officers responded to a call of another purse snatching at Walmart at 1550 Riverstone Parkway. Those cops arrived and met with loss prevention staff members, who directed them to a suspect trying to flee the scene. That man, identified as Curtiss Cavender, was found in a nearby parking lot of a restaurant and officers took him into custody.

After interviewing Cavender, 21, officers learned the identities of his alleged accomplices, fellow Canton residents Ravin Riedinger, 21, and Gregory Cummings, 26.

Arrest warrants were issued for the suspects, and they were all arrested Nov. 13 after they were allegedly involved in a domestic dispute. They are all charged with two counts of robbery by sudden snatching and one count of theft by shoplifting. Cavender, 21, is also charged with battery, criminal attempt to commit a misdemeanor and entering auto while Riedinger faces an additional charge of simple battery under the Family Violence Act in connection to the dispute.

“We are very proud of our hardworking officers and detectives that apprehended these individuals who were preying on our citizens," said Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell. "This is also a very good reminder to our public for the need to always be aware of your surroundings and do all you can to safeguard yourself from becoming a victim of this type of criminal activity, especially during the holiday season."

Now that we are in the midst of the holiday shopping season, the Canton Police Department is also sharing these tips with citizens:

  • Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas.
  • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
  • Don’t be distracted by using electronic devices while shopping.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
  • Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.
  • Keep cash in your front pocket.
  • Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.
  • Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
  • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, con artists may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
