Bicyclist Hit By SUV In Cherokee County

The 60-year-old Canton resident tried to cross Old Highway 5 near Sixes Road when he was hit by a vehicle.

HOLLY SPRINGS, GA -- A man riding a bicycle across Old Highway 5 was injured last week when he was struck by a vehicle in Holly Springs.

The Georgia State Patrol responded to the collision, which was reported around 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4 on Old Highway 5 near Sixes Road.

A preliminary report indicates a 2017 Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound on the highway when the bicyclist, attempting to cross the road, "failed to yield when he entered the roadway," the state agency said.

The SUV struck the bicyclist with the front part of the vehicle. Its driver, Anna Johnson, 53, of Canton, was not injured. The bicyclist, identified as 60-year-old Jose Gonzalez-Nieves of Canton, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he was treated for injuries.

The collision remains under investigation.
