"Thank you to the voters of Cherokee County District 3 and all the members of Team Kovacs," Kovacs said on his Facebook page. "It's official - we won."
When reached Tuesday evening, Kovacs said he was "a little overwhelmed," but thankful for residents for "putting their faith in me."
He also expressed disappointment in the shockingly small number of registered voters who showed up to the polls to cast ballots.
For his part, Staver remained positive despite of the results, noting he had countless people across the county who pitched to help him with his campaign.
"I’ve made lots of new friends and I’m happy with what I did," he said.
When asked if he plans to remain active in local politics, Staver said he's been involved in politics for a long time and doesn't plan to hang up that activist hat.
"I'm not going anywhere," he said with a chuckle. "It’s still our government, so I will definitely be involved.”
