The board is set to select a person to serve the remainder of Read’s term at its July 22 meeting. Read’s term expires December 2016.
The process is same the board used last year when former District 1 board member Kelly Trim resigned after she was found guilty of making false statements to police.
Under Georgia law, if a vacancy occurs more than two years and 90 days before an elected official’s term is set to expire, an interim appointment would be made until a special election could be held in conjunction with a general election to fill the seat.
If the vacancy occurs less than two years and 90 days before the term expires, the governing body can appoint a successor until the term expires.
Applications, which must also be signed before a notary public, can be delivered to:
Roach, Caudill and Gunn LLP
111 West Main Street
Canton, GA 30114
The application can be obtained by visiting the Cherokee County School District’s website.
