The optional two-day training experience is designed to offer immediate support and information to first-year teachers starting their career in the district, said District Supervisor of Profesional Development Jackie Miller.

“Our goal is to develop and sustain their knowledge, confidence and excitement for their best first year in CCSD,” she said.

Of the 111 total eligible newly hired beginning teachers, 106 participated in the program, which was held in July at Teasley Middle School. Participants earned a salary induction incentive of $150 for completing one day of training or $300 for completing both.

Thirty sessions were offered on topics including technology training, special education program information, Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES) evaluations, Georgia Standards of Excellence, classroom accountability and mentor teacher support.

The event began with a welcome session featuring comments from the Superintendent’s Cabinet and 2015 Teacher of the Year, Joy Silk of Ball Ground Elementary School STEM Academy. Additionally, all participants were provided a personnel perspectives session addressing certification, performance evaluation and work calendars.

“Camp Cherokee truly opened my eyes to a day in the life of a CCSD teacher,” one participant shared in her post-training comments. “I am proud to now count myself among them. Thank you for the excellent introduction to CCSD.”

Newly hired teachers this summer also had the opportunity to pick up their CCSD-allocated laptop and attend a Technology Boot Camp professional development program.
