Canton Hires New City Clerk

Oma "Lou" Stewart will begin her duties with the city on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

CANTON, GA -- Months after firing the person tasked with official record keeping for municipal operations, Canton leaders have finally brought on a new person to serve as its city clerk.

Oma "Lou" Stewart will begin her duties with the city of Canton on Wednesday, Aug. 9, City Manager Billy Peppers said. Stewart, who most recently served as Waleska's city clerk/manager, replaces former City Clerk Susan Stanton, who served in that position for roughly five years before she was fired by the City Council.

Stewart's appointment was unanimously approved at the Council's July 20 meeting. City Manager Peppers said the city began advertising for the vacant position and received a little more than 50 applicants.

Before going to Waleska, Stewart also served in the city of Dahlonega.

“She brings a great deal of experience to the table," he told the City Council at its July 20 meeting.
