The agency recently purchase eight Automated External Defibrillators, or AEDs, that will be issued to supervisors and officers in the Uniform Patrol Division.

An AED uses an electrical shock through the chest wall to the heart. A built-in computer assesses a person’s heart rhythm to determine if defibrillation is needed. If so, the device then deploys the electrical shock.

“We strongly feel the addition of AED’s will enhance our first responders capabilties and our service to the community by giving officers an extra tool they need to potentially save one of our citizen’s life,” said Chief Mark Mitchell.

Mitchell said the department’s goal is to purchase more AEDs to equip all patrol vehicles with the life-saving tool.
