Canton Wants To Hire Parks and Recreation, Main Street Directors

The city of Canton wants to fill two positions, as well as hire one police officer, a building inspector and more firefighters.

The city of Canton has a few job openings for anyone looking to enter the public sector.

The Cherokee County seat is looking to hire new director for its Main Street Program and its first parks and recreation director. Canton is also looking for another police officer, firefighters and a building inspector.

Former Main Street Program Director Meghan Griffin resigned from the post last month. 

The director of the city’s Main Street Program is responsible for scheduling, planning and managing special events for the city and activities for the program. This position works under the direct supervision of Canton’s economic development manager.

Qualifications to serve as Main Street Program director include:

  • high school diploma or equivalent;
  • a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, communications and marketing or closely related field;
  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, economics, public administration, business or related field, preferred;
  • valid state of Georgia driver’s license;
  • any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

The parks and recreation director will oversees the development, management, scheduling and operation of parks and recreational facilities, programs and events. Work includes organizing, planning, coordination, evaluating and directing the work of employees. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the city manager.

For those who’d like to guide the city’s parks and recreation department, the following qualifications must be met:

  • bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, physical education, or closely related field;
  • possess Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) and Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certifications;
  • six (6) years of experience in public recreation, including two (2) years in planning and administration; or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience providing the knowledge, skills and abilities required by this position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Applicants for this position must possess interpersonal skills, formal planning and scheduling experience, computer literacy, and knowledge of principles, practices, and methods used: in parks and recreation administration; in the management of programs and activities; and in facility acquisition and maintenance. This position also requires the applicant to multi-task at a high level of demand.
