CCSD Celebrates National School Breakfast Week

The School Breakfast Program currently serves more than 14 million students every day nationwide.

From CCSD: The Cherokee County School District is celebrating National School Breakfast Week (March 5-9) with special menus and activities to encourage more children to enjoy a healthy breakfast!

The School Breakfast Program currently serves more than 14 million students every day nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and 6,000 of those breakfasts are served every day in CCSD schools.

“A healthy breakfast at the start of the day is one way to ensure students are getting the best education possible,” CCSD Director of School Nutrition Tina Farmer said. “National School Breakfast Week helps us educate parents and students about all the healthy, great tasting, and appealing choices we offer.”

This year’s theme is “I Heart School Breakfast,” and in CCSD cafeterias, students will enjoy a fruit parfait at breakfast on Tuesday featuring homemade granola and breakfast for lunch on Wednesday with waffles, sausage, potato wedges, strawberries and warm cinnamon peaches. The National campaign is sponsored by the School Nutrition Association and Kellogg’s.

School nutrition professionals prepare breakfast and lunches every day that meet federal nutrition standards – limiting fat, calories and sodium – while encouraging students to choose from the fruits, vegetables and whole grains offered with school meals.

Daily breakfast options include fresh-baked sausage and chicken biscuits, pancakes, waffles, breakfast pizza, low-fat yogurt and whole grain cereals and pastries. The School District is increasing access to breakfast for students by offering “Grab and Go Breakfast” options at a growing list of schools including Clark Creek ES STEM Academy and Carmel and Macedonia ES; Dean Rusk and Mill Creek MS; and River Ridge and Woodstock HS.

National studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to: reach higher levels of math achievement; score higher on tests; have better concentration, memory and alertness, improved attendance, behavior, and academic performance; and maintain a healthy weight
