CCSD Runners Named To All-Metro Cross Country Team

From ATL Track Club: Two young standout runners from Cherokee County are receiving top honors from Atlanta Track Club. Makena Gates of Creekview High School and Brynne Sumner of Woodstock High School are among the 42 athletes selected to the 2018 Powerade All-Metro Cross Country Team.

For both runners, this marks a second Powerade All-Metro Team selection, as Sumner was named to the All-Metro Track & Field team last spring and Gates was on the All-Metro Cross Country Team last fall. Gates, a sophomore and last year’s Most Outstanding Athlete Award winner, defended her 6A State Title in impressive fashion, while Sumner took the 7A crown for the first time at last weekend’s GHSA State Cross Country Championships.

“Each fall we’re inspired by the phenomenal performances of metro Atlanta’s young cross country runners,” said Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club’s Executive Director. “These athletes are the future of Running City USA, and it’s our honor to have them be a part of the 2018 Powerade All-Metro Cross Country Team.” Beginning today, parents, fans, coaches and fellow athletes will vote to determine selections to the Powerade All-Metro 1st , 2nd and 3rd teams. New this year, the community will be able to vote on a platform hosted by 11Alive at this link. Athletes selected to the first team will receive a $500 scholarship from the Atlanta Track Club Foundation. The top-ranked male and female will receive the Most Outstanding Athlete Award. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. on November 12.

Top selections and top athletes will be revealed at the Powerade All-Metro Cross Country Banquet on December 4 at the Stave Room in Midtown Atlanta. The event will be hosted by 2004 Olympian and NBC Broadcaster Carrie Tollefson for the second straight year. Below are the athletes selected to the 2018 All-Metro Team.
