Charges Expected in Stabbing Death of State Prison Inmate

Authorities say charges are expected in the stabbing death of an inmate earlier this month at Phillips State Prison near Buford.

The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office said an indictment is expected for Allah Jahmal Ware for the Jan. 4 death of Antonio Maurice Turner, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.

Turner, 27, of Canton, was found facedown in his cell and had been stabbed four times, the newspaper reported.

According to prison records, Ware, 23, is currently serving a 30-year sentence for armed robberies and aggravated assault in Walker County. Turner was serving a 10-year sentence for strong-arm robbery in Cherokee County.

Specifics of what led to the attack on Turner have not been disclosed.

Turner’s mother Katherene Stephens told the Post she spoke to her son earlier on the same day as the homicide, but he didn’t mentioned any problems at the prison.

Phillips State Prison is located at 2889 West Rock Quarry Road in Buford.
