Cherokee Schools Receive Character Education Awards

Liberty and Carmel elementary schools were recently named Promising Practices awards winners.

CANTON, GA -- Two Cherokee County elementary schools recently accepted international awards recognizing their character education initiatives.

Carmel Elementary School and Liberty Elementary School were named Promising Practices awards winners in May by Character.org, with the awards presented this month at the National Forum on Character Education in Washington., D.C.

They are two of only four schools from Georgia to win the honor. Carmel was recognizing for its community children’s garden project, and Liberty was honored for its “Have a Heart for Seniors” program.

This is the second Promising Practices honor for both schools. Liberty Assistant Principal Dr. Pam Green, who previously served in the same role at Carmel, led that initiative and the successful effort for Carmel to be named a National School of Character.

Liberty ES Principal Doug Knott, who added Liberty's second award was due to the work of the school's Student Leadership Team, said he and Dr. Green now are focused on earning the National School of Character designation there as well.
