The most recent incidents in the long-running scams involve callers identifying themselves as law enforcement officials and requesting payment over the phone for fines related to tickets, warrants or missed court appearances.

“This is to scare the victim into paying fines over the phone and share personal data with the suspects,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please know that no one from the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office will ever contact you over the phone in regards to a paying a fine or paying something off.”

Residents are encouraged to notify the sheriff’s office if they receive calls of this nature. The agency also asks citizens to share this information to friends and family members, particularly elderly residents, as sharing personal information over the phone could subject residents to identity fraud.
