Don't light up...there's a burn ban you know! An outdoor burning ban is in effect for 54 counties in Georgia from May 1 through Sept. 30, and this includes ALL of Cherokee County. The annual summer burn ban prohibits residents from burning any yard or land clearing debris. This rule is in addition to the year-round state ban on the burning of household garbage or refuse.
Some exceptions include: agricultural burning exemptions, forestry prescribed burning exemptions, campfires or barbeques, firefighting training, operation of open flame equipment and explosives disposal. The open burning ban has been in place during the summer ozone season since 2005. Learn more:

The Georgia EPD imposes a ban on outdoor burning to comply with Federal Clean Air Regulations. During the summer months in Georgia, the ozone in the air we breathe can reach unhealthy levels. The Georgia EPD has identified open burning as a significant contributor of the pollutants that form ozone.
