Community Garden to Open Sunday

Canton Community Victory Garden East is located at the water tower at Big Oak Drive.

The city's first community garden will open on Sunday.

Since the approved the garden at its Jan. 26 meeting, volunteers have worked to get Canton Community Victory Garden East ready for Sunday's 2 p.m. debut, general manager Laine Wood said on Tuesday.

The  Foundation awarded the garden a $9,000 community grant for fencing, an irrigation system, raised beds and pavilions with rain collections systems.

Classic Manor Builders donated a metal-roofed gazebo that was delivered on April 13.

And at 8 a.m. Thursday, an "invasion of orange aprons" from Home Depot—about 50 volunteers in all—will work all day to put the finishing touches on the garden, which is located east of Interstate 575 at 146 Big Oak Drive.

" will be providing breakfast for all volunteers and will be bringing lunch," Wood said. "Our local fire department will be on hand all day to provide first aid and to make sure all workers stay hydrated. Portable toilets have graciously been provided by the city."

The Sunday dedication ceremony will feature remarks from Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood, the Pledge of Allegiance from a local Girl Scout troop and a blessing from  of .

"All Canton residents are invited," Wood said.
