Cherokee County Commissioners on Wednesday voted to impose a moratorium on issuing permits relating to its sign ordinance.

The commission unanimously approved the 45-day moratorium at a called meeting. District 3 Commissioner Brian Poole was not present.

The moratorium allows county staff to review its ordinance following last week’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

According to NPR, justices last week struck down a Gilbert, Arizona, sign ordinance and “issued a broad new constitutional mandate requiring the highest standard of proof to justify differing limits on signage.”

The issue stemmed from the city imposing limits onto a church regarding temporary signs it placed around town providing directions to events, NPR reported.
