County Schedules Public Hearings For Property Tax Hike

The Cherokee Board of Commissioners has tentatively adopted a millage rate that would raise property taxes by .82 percent.

CANTON, GA -- Cherokee County commissioners have tentatively adopted a millage rate that will require an increase in property taxes by .82 percent.

As such, commissioners will host three public hearings on the tax increase at the Cherokee County Administration Building at 1130 Bluffs Parkway in Canton.

  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20;
  • 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 18; and
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 18.

According to the county's notice, the increase will result in a M&O millage rate of 5.528 mills for 2017, an increase of .045 mills. Without this increase, the millage rate will be no more than 5.483.

The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $225,000 is $3.82, and the proposed tax increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $200,000 is $3.60, the county states.
