Funn For Lunn Raises Raises More Than $8,000

The event was held to help the family of Knox Elementary School student Monica Lunn, who was paralyzed in an accident in March.

CANTON, GA -- The Cherokee County Community came together over the weekend to help a Knox Elementary School student seriously injured in an automobile accident.

Funn for Lunn, a fundraiser for kindergarten student Monica Lunn, was held May 21 at the school, and raised $8,650 to help purchase a wheelchair accessible van for the student, said Cherokee County Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Robinson.

The sudden need for the van stems from a life-changing car accident that took place outside the school on Tuesday, March 29.

The vehicle Monica, her sister Melina and their mom were occupying tried to make a left turn from Knox Bridge Highway/S.R. 20 on River Bend Way when it was hit by a Ford pick-up truck, the Georgia State Patrol previously told Patch.

Monica spent the first three weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, which is where the family learned Monica would be paralyzed from the neck down and require the use of a respirator to breathe.

The money raised at the event will be added to funds already raised by the school to help with the family's needs. Robinson also said $1,500 has also been donated to assist the family with repairs to their home to make it more accessible for Monica and her wheelchair.
