A single-vehicle accident shut down a major thoroughfare early Friday morning in Cherokee County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a garbage truck was traveling northbound around 5:20 a.m. on East Cherokee Drive near Little Road in Hickory Flat when he “lost control of his vehicle” when he swerved to avoid a deer.
The truck traveled off the roadway and overturned onto its top, the state agency said.

The driver suffered minor injuries, and was transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee for treatment.
The roadway was reopened around 8 a.m. Friday, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office. The accident remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
