BALL GROUND, GA -- A public information open house will be held next week to discuss plans to replace a bridge in Cherokee County.
The Georgia Department of Transportation's open house will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at Hightower Baptist Church.

Residents interested in learning more about the proposed project are encouraged to attend the meeting and express their thoughts, preferences and concerns.
Plans call for replacing the existing bridge in stages, allowing traffic to continue to use the existing bridge while a portion of the proposed bridge is built south of existing structure. Traffic will then be shifted to the newly constructed portion of the bridge to work on the removal of the old bridge and completing the remaining portion of the new bridge.

This will allow the highway at this location to remain open during bridge construction. The existing bridge, which was built in 1960, has been classified as "functionally obsolete" and recommended for replacement, GDOT says.
“The Georgia DOT strongly believes that since this project is intended to serve the people of Cherokee County," said DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville. "The ideas and preferences of these people are important."
The open house will be informal and the public is invited to attend anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. Hightower Baptist Church is located at 3444 Hightower Road.
The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities, and accommodations for those residents needing assistance can be arranged with advance notice by calling Cherie Marsh at (678) 721-5257.
