KSU Grad Finds Success Through TESOL Certificate Program

Jill Conversano educates people and explores culture.

After taking a break from a career as a writer and editor, Jill Conversano decided to pursue professional education. A passion for teaching and helping others led Conversano to the TESOL certificate program at KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education.

“It would have been easy to drop back into writing and editing, but I wanted to do something different,” Conversano said.

The certificate program provided her with extensive hands-on experience in a classroom setting. Throughout the program, Conversano found the culture portion of the course the most enjoyable. In these sections of the program, she learned about the many levels of linguistic and cultural diversity. The course also examined how language is acquired across age levels according to research and theory.

She discovered exploring different cultures was important with so many students being from different countries. Receiving information about others experiences helped everyone in the class learn about individuals’ uniqueness.

“Cultural awareness and sensitivity is paramount if you want to be an ESL teacher,” Conversano said. “I was surprised at how we all bonded. Everyone was supportive and we enjoyed classes together.”

Through the connections she made in the program, Conversano learned of a job opening at Gwinnett Technical College. In January, she accepted the position as an Adjunct ESL/Literacy Instructor at GTC’s Adult Education Department.

The most rewarding aspect of teaching for Conversano is the students themselves. She enjoys spending time in the classroom with students and seeing them work together toward a common goal. Conversano says teaching English allows her to see the importance of inclusiveness in America.

“They are so inspiring with their hopes and dreams for using English,” Conversano said. “[For] better jobs, talking with their children’s teachers and just being able to complete day-to-day activities and be a part of society.”

Her preferred method of teaching is conversational. She believes students benefit from practice in speaking the language as it allows them to retain the knowledge and feel confident and comfortable. Aside from having a lesson plan prepared, she also prepares worksheets, discussions and language-based games that will help them learn in an interactive environment.

Conversano’s long-term goal is live and teach abroad. She feels her current position is helping her prepare for a career overseas.
