Heating and Air FAQs for Homeowners

If you're a homeowner, you know just how important your HVAC system is to the comfort and security of you and your family.

If you're a homeowner, you know just how important your HVAC system is to the comfort and security of you and your family. You may also know that maintenance and repairs are important and can't be put off if needed. Its important to get to know your HVAC system so that you can keep it running efficiently and cost effectively.

Today we're going to go over some of the most frequently asked questions we get in regards to residential HVAC systems.

Q: How can I cut back on my utility bills each month?

Find out what's happening in Canton-Sixesfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

A: There are many ways to cut costs on your utility bills each month just by making a few tweaks. You can upgrade your HVAC system to a high efficiency system, adjust your thermostat when you won't be home, make use of your ceiling fans, change your furnace and air filters, keep up with yearly preventative maintenance on your unit, and install a programmable thermostat.

Q: Does a bigger system provide better heating and cooling?

Find out what's happening in Canton-Sixesfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

A: Not necessarily. Its important to buy a unit that is the correct size for your home based on its square footage. If you purchase a unit that is too big for your home, it will cool or heat your home more quickly, causing it to start and stop more frequently. This constant stopping and starting can drastically increase the cost of your utility bills. In the long run, this constant starting and stopping can also shorten the lifespan of your unit, resulting in higher maintenance costs and needing to replace it sooner.

Q: Should I repair my unit or just replace it?

A: This varies based on your circumstances. If your system is 7 years or older and needs frequent repairs, it may be more cost effective to replace it. Also, if the unit stops working all together (doesn't heat or cool your home at all), it may be more cost effective to purchase a new unit, as this problem would require major repairs that may only last for another year. Also, if you notice your unit running constantly or constantly starting and stopping, it may be time for a new unit. Having your unit inspected by a Professional HVAC Contractor who is familiar with your unit, your home, and your particular needs is the best way to choose between repairs or replacement.

Q: Does my AC system need a filter?

A: While it is possible to run an AC system without a filter, it is definitely not recommended! The air filter serves to filter out debris blowing off the motor and evaporator coil and into your home. The filter can also help your unit run more efficiently, cutting back on your utility bills.

Q: How Often should I change my air filter?

A: This answer will be different for every one. Each HVAC system is different, so the needs of the system will be different. Generally, 1" disposable filters should be changed every 1-3 months, depending on the pollution where you live and how much your unit is running. If you have a thicker, high efficiency filter, it could last up to a year. If you aren't sure about when to change your filter, check with your manufacturer.

Q: How long will my HVAC system last?

A: This answer will be different for everyone based on a couple of factors. The type of system you have can determine about how long the system will last. Also, how much preventive maintenance you've done can also affect how long the system will last. Doing yearly maintenance can greatly extend the lifespan of your system. Generally speaking, your HVAC system should last between 15-25 years.
