This committee tasked itself with collecting and preserving oral histories from long-time residents of the county in an effort to "provide an original resource of cultural and historical data of our county for researchers and future generations," the society said.

Last week, the committee continued on that quest when it visited a popular church in the Hickory Flat community.

Committee members on Thursday, April 21 spent the day at Mt. Zion Baptist Church interviewing 30 long-time residents. Last week's project involved gathering genealogical information and scanning historic local photos.

Participants received a copy of their interview, which will be archived in the Historical Society's database. Oral histories are cataloged and indexed by name and subject matter for easy searching by researchers and family members.

If you would like to help preserve the history and memories of Cherokee County as member of the committee or if you know a potential candidate to interview, contact the Historical Society at 770-345-3288 or sjoyner@rockbarn.org.
