Incumbents Win Canton Mayor, City Council Races

Mayor Gene Hobgood and Council members Jack Goodwin and Farris Yawn all defeated challengers in Tuesday's races.

There won’t be a change in leadership on the Canton City Council.

That’s according to preliminary election results, which show the three incumbents in the city’s contested races have won re-election.

Mayor Gene Hobgood defeated challenger and former City Council member Pat Tanner with 70.6 percent, or 1,035 votes. Tanner received 29.4 percent, or 431 votes.

Incumbent Jack Goodwin also fought off a challenge from resident John Clark for the Ward 2 seat. Goodwin was re-elected with 61.03 percent, or 855 votes. Clark’s share of the vote was 38.83 percent, or 544.

Ward 3 incumbent Farris Yawn also defeated challenger Jim Busi in Tuesday’s election. Yawn received 70.71 percent, or 1,021 votes, compared to Busi’s 29.22 percent, or 422 votes.

Former City Council member Jo Ellen Wilson faced no opposition for the Ward 1 seat.

The city of Canton has 10,153 registered voters, and a total of 1,475 voters cast ballots on Tuesday.

Both Yawn and Hobgood took to Facebook to express their appreciation to voters propelled them to re-election.

“Thank you to the citizens of Canton, GA for giving me the honor of serving as your mayor for another term,” Hobgood said on his Facebook page. “Tomorrow we return to the work of moving‪ #‎CantonForward‬.”

Yawn added he is ”pleased and honored to continue serving as your Ward 3 councilman.”
