Inmate Dies By Suicide In Cherokee Jail: Sheriff's Office

An inmate at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center died by suicide Monday night, the sheriff's office said.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — An inmate died by suicide Monday night at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, officials said.

David Wayne Mills, 55, of Acworth, had been arrested by a sheriff's deputy for driving under the influence, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

"The death occurred in a holding cell of the book in area of the detention center," the statement said. "No other persons were in the cell with Mills at the time of his death."

As with any in-custody death, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded and is investigating the incident, the department said.

"At this point, our agency doesn’t have any additional details to release on this investigation," GBI Public Affairs Director Nelly Miles said. "We’ll be awaiting the results of the GBI Medical Examiner’s autopsy, once that is scheduled."
