The Georgia DOT has awarded two contracts to Cartersville-based Bartow Paving Co., Inc. and Baldwin Paving Co., Inc. of Marietta, valued at just over $270,000 for a construction project to introduce some “interim improvements to the highway in Cherokee County,” the agency said in its press release.

The project includes the construction of an additional eastbound lane to S.R. 20, beginning at I-575 and extending to Brooke Park Drive, a distance of a half-mile. It also includes the reconfiguration and restriping of this portion of the S.R. 20.

This project was initiated by public feedback received at the transportation town hall meeting hosted by State Senator Brandon Beach in June, and is intended to provide quick relief from congestion caused by “fast commercial development in this part of Cherokee County,” GDOT added.

“I am proud that through our working relationship with state and local officials that we can help another Cherokee County community meet its immediate transportation needs,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell McMurray said. “These interim improvements will enhance the safe mobility of Cherokee County’s residents.”

The project is scheduled to be completed in month, at a construction cost of $272,387. Work will mostly be done during the non-peak hours, in order to minimize the impact of construction on the heavy traffic in the area.
