Man Shot In Eye By Homeowner Charged With Burglary

The 19-year-old man was found outside the home on Santa Fe Trail in Woodstock early Thursday morning, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- The 19-year-old man who was shot in the face early Thursday morning while, according to police, trying to break into a home has been charged in connection with the incident.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has charged Acworth resident Donavan Simmons with residential burglary, terroristic threats and possession of a schedule IV drug with the intent to distribute, said spokesperson Sgt. Marianne Kelley.

Deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress call around 2:40 a.m. Nov. 16 at a home on Santa Fe Trail, which is located off Highway 92 east of Bells Ferry Road near Woodstock.

Deputies arrived on the scene to find Simmons lying in the backyard of the home with a gunshot wound to the head. Sgt. Kelley said Simmons was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital for follow-up care.

"The homeowner advised that the suspect was making entry into the basement area of his home when he shot in the general direction of the suspect," Sgt. Kelley previously told Patch.

No one inside the home was injured, and the sheriff's office said the homeowner will not be charged in the case.

Simmons has a bond set at $16,000.
