Motive Unclear in Fatal Restaurant Shooting

A 41-year-old Canton resident was gunned down July 28 while eating at Taqueria Oaxaquena on Marietta Road.

CANTON, GA -- Canton police investigators continue to unearth clues and other information that could lead them to find out what led to a fatal shooting at a restaurant.

Police Chief Mark Mitchell said detectives are conducting follow-up interviews and reviewing statements to determine a motive and if the victim and suspect were acquainted in some form or fashion.

Edel Cortes Mendoza, 41, of Canton was eating inside Taqueria Oaxaquena at 491 Marietta Road on Thursday, July 28 when Ylarrio Garcia Jarquin walked into the restaurant and allegedly shot the victim, police previously told Patch.

Mitchell said various witnesses such as employees and patrons were inside the establishment during the shooting, but said he did not have an accurate headcount.

Following the shooting, police set up a perimeter around the eatery and tracked down the 41-year-old suspect a short time later.

Mendoza, who was employed with H & H Electric and Security, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The company said the fatal shooting resulted in the loss of "our friend, and valued, long-time employee."

"He was a kind, loyal and hardworking man, lost to senseless violence," the company said Aug. 1 on its Facebook page. "He will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this time of grief and confusion."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help collect funeral funds for Mendoza, who Mitchell said was married, but was not sure if he had children.

Jarquin remains held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center with no bond.
