New Peruvian Restaurant Coming To Downtown Canton

Mazzato will open in the space previously occupied by The Snug Gastro Pub.

CANTON, GA — A new restaurant will soon open in downtown Canton, and will provide residents a chance to explore and savor cuisine particular to a South American country.

Chef Jeffrey del Carpio has set his sights on opening Mazzato at 190 East Main Street, the space formerly occupied by The Snug Gastro Pub. Carpio told Patch he's hoping to open the new Peruvian restaurant by June 25. This eatery will offer a contemporary mash-up of classic Peruvian dishes fused with Asian and American flavors.

Del Carpio is a Washington, D.C.-based chef and previously worked in restaurants that were named to the Michelin Guide's top 100 restaurants in the district. He was recruited to come to Canton after his local business partner, Juan Kukurelo, expressed interest in opening a restaurant in the Cherokee County seat.

He told the chef he even had an idea for the perfect location for an eatery. Del Carpio made a visit to Canton and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

“I like the location and I like the people here," Del Carpio said. “I think this city needs something different.”

That desire for something new is what he believes will propel residents to come check out the new restaurant. The team is in the midst of doing renovations to transform the place into a warm, welcoming environment complete with Peruvian decor.

Del Carpio, who said he has since relocated to Canton, noted he's excited about adding a new twist to the options available to residents and shoppers in the city's central business district.

"It’s going to be something totally different, and I’m very sure everyone is going to love the food," he said.

Be sure to follow the restaurant's Facebook page to stay abreast of all the details of the business. A website is also under construction and can be viewed here.
