The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has finally been able to identify the body found Wednesday afternoon in a Canton house fire.

The victim has been identified as 65-year-old Villa Rica resident Frank Greene, the owner of the home at 104 Legend Creek Drive, Canton police said Friday afternoon. The GBI’s Crime Lab was able to “forensically” identify Greene as the victim, something an autopsy conducted on Thursday was unable to reveal, said Canton police officer Pacer Cordry.

The manner and cause of death, however, remain undetermined at this point, he added.

Firefighters with both Canton Fire Department and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services made the grim discovery following a response to the blaze around 4 p.m. Sept. 2 at the home.

Legend Creek Drive sits off S.R. 20/Knox Bridge Highway west of Joseph Knox Elementary School.

Fire units arrived on the scene, and eventually put out the blaze. Once the fire was extinguished, authorities discovered a “deceased person” inside the home, Canton police previously said.

Chief Mark Mitchell said the home appeared to have been vacant and up for sale at the time of the fire and discovery of the body.

Detectives with the Canton Police Department and Cherokee Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the incident. Return to Patch for updates.
