Proclamations Celebrate Rotary Club's Dedication to 'Service Above Self'

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners recognized the good work of the Rotary Club of Canton and the other clubs in Cherokee County at its Feb. 17 meeting.

Commission Chairman Buzz Ahrens read a proclamation declaring Feb. 14 as Rotary Has Heart Day and Feb. 23 as Rotary Day in Cherokee County.

Ahrens presented Rotary Club of Canton President Hugh Beavers with a signed and framed proclamation at the commission’s meeting on Mardi Gras.

Rotary Has Heart Day is an initiative of Rotary International Zone 33-34 Director Robert Hall to have every Rotary Club in the 29 Rotary Districts from Virginia to the northern tier of South America perform a community service project during the first quarter of 2015 to demonstrate Rotary’s ”heart” for “Service Above Self.”

The Rotary Clubs in Cherokee County will jointly participate in a Rotary Has Heart project of promoting a child sexual abuse awareness program through the Anna Crawford Children’s Center.

Rotary Day coincides with the anniversary of the founding of Rotary International on Feb. 23, 1905. As outlined in the proclamation, both recognitions are intended to highlight the many international and community contributions by the Rotary Club of Canton and the other Rotary clubs in Cherokee County.

Commission Chairman Ahrens will re-present the Proclamation to Beavers at the club’s Feb. 24 weekly meeting, when the club will celebrate Rotary’s 110th birthday with a birthday cake for dessert and by singing “Happy Birthday” to Rotary International.
