Recycling Center Opens To Non-County Residents For A Fee

A rise in the number of vehicles serviced by the Cherokee Recycling Centers has forced a fee for non-county users.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — The Cherokee County Recycling Center will begin allowing out-of-county residents to utilize recycling services for a fee. The service to county residents remains free.

As many private trash haulers halt recycling services, the county recycling center is seeing an increase in recyclables dropped off, which is increasing operational costs.

Beginning Thursday, Feb. 10, out-of-county residents can begin utilizing the services of the recycling center for a $10 fee. As the services is opened to non-Cherokee County residents, photo ID proving residency will now be required. Residents and non-residents still will be limited to a single-vehicle load per day. Fees for other items, including household appliances, still will apply.

“The Cherokee County Recycling Center has always been for Cherokee County residents, and until now, there has not been a need to enforce this rule,” Recycling Center Manager Troy Brazie said in a news release. “As we see an increase in usage, we will now have to ensure the free service only is being utilized by our county residents.”

In January 2021, the Recycling Center served 3,610 vehicles for trash and recyclables. In January 2022, that number jumped to 5,309; however, there was no increase in revenue.

“We did not see additional revenue despite the large increase in vehicles, however, hauling fees, manpower and equipment needs have increased,” Brazie said.
