Richard "Hunkey" Mauldin, 73, Championed Baseball in Cherokee County

Funeral services for the former minor league pitcher will be held on Thursday at South Canton Funeral Home.

Richard “Hunkey” Mauldin, age 73, of Canton, GA passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8 at home.

Memorial Services are scheduled for p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Pastor Joe McKechnie officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 at South Canton Funeral Home.

  • Editor’s note: Richard Mauldin played minor league baseball, was inducted into the Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and also lobbied Cherokee County and the city of Canton construct an updated set of baseball fields. The Richard Mauldin Baseball Complex at Kenney Askew Park is named in his honor.

Preceded in death by parents, Philemon and Bessie Williams Mauldin; and brother, Dusty Mauldin.

Survivors include: wife of 53 years - Joyce Mauldin; daughters Joy (Greg) Hester, Paige (Jay) Baker; and Mandy (Ben) Miller; brother, Roy Mauldin; sister, Helen (Merl) King; and grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha Hester, Grayson, Max and Sophie Baker and Graham and Rylee Miller.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Sixes UMC or Cherokee County Youth Recreation in his memory.
