The department held a breakfast last month, and recognized 67 Georgia High Schools -- including Cherokee -- that now can award eligible students this seal on their diploma; an International Skills Diploma Seal Star Student from each of those schools also was honored.

The state designed the International Skills Diploma Seal program to encourage and recognize students who complete an “international education curriculum and engage in extracurricular activities and experiences that foster the achievement of global competencies… it is a signal to employers and higher education institutions that a student is prepared to participate in the global economy.”

To earn the designation, students must complete at least three credits in the same world language and/or English for Speakers of Other Languages; at least four credits in courses determined to have an international focus (e.g., international economics, world/non-US history, world geography, etc.), at least four extra-curricular activities and experiences with global themes and/or in global contexts (e.g., exchange programs, international and language clubs, travel abroad), 20 hours of community service involving a global/cross-cultural public service project and a capstone presentation on the knowledge gained in the courses and aforementioned activities.

Tatiana was selected by Cherokee High School for not only her academic success, but also her community service. Every morning before school, she visits neighboring Canton ES STEM Academy to mentor an elementary school student who spoke only French when she began classes there in October.

“This dedication to a young child in our community is just one example of Tatiana’s strength of character and compassion,” Graduation Coach Liz Spell said. “In the classroom, Tatiana is focused and engaged as she is enrolled in the highest level of rigorous classes offered at our high school. Tatiana has a true world focus and embraces situations that are new and different as an opportunity to learn and grow. Her goals and standards are set high, and the faculty at Cherokee High School has all the confidence in the world that she will attain and surpass all of the goals she has set for herself.”
