Sixes Elementary Student Saves Classmate From Choking
The student and a lunch monitor saved the child who was choking on food at the school in Canton.

A student and lunch monitor at Sixes Elementary School in Canton are being touted as heroes for saving a third-grade student from choking.
When third-grader Gia DiCarlo recently started choking on a bite of food at lunch, fellow classmate Bailey Johnson alerted lunch monitor Gloria Szopinski.
Szopinski successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the food that was choking Gia, the Cherokee County School District said on Monday.

“The life of a sweet little girl was saved at lunch by the actions of a classmate and a lunch monitor who were observant and skilled,” Sixes Elementary Principal Cindy Crews said.
Crews presented Szopinski and Bailey with “You Make the Difference” Star Awards.

Gia also gave each of them a special thank-you gift.
