Suspect Arrested For Shooting Canton Man Tuesday Night: Police

A 22-year-old Canton man has been arrested for shooting another man four times Tuesday night before fleeing, the Sheriff's Office said.

CANTON, GA — A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred Tuesday night, the Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect who was arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred on Canton Street was identified as Zytron Sands, 22, of Canton.

Cherokee sheriff’s deputies responded an area around Reinhardt College Parkway and Old Donaldson Road at 6 p.m. Tuesday night.

After deputies responded to the shots fired call, a male arrived at Northside Hospital Cherokee Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Sands got into an altercation with Deshawn Taifa-Baker, 25, of Canton, and shot the victim four times with a 9 mm. Sands fled the area on foot but was later captured, police say.

Taifa-Baker was treated at Northside Hospital Cherokee for gunshot wounds to his legs and released.

The firearm, which had been reported stolen out of Florida, was recovered in the woods near where Sands was taken into custody, the department said.

Sands was charged with four counts of aggravated battery, four counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony theft by receiving stolen property.

He remains in custody at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center.

Sheriff’s deputies were aided by the Canton Police and the Holly Springs Police.
