15 Killed In Crashes During 2017 Christmas Travel Period

The Georgia State Patrol worked accidents involving 10 deaths while local agencies handled 5 fatalities from Dec. 22 to Dec. 26.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — The Georgia State Patrol said 15 people died over the five-day 2017 Christmas holiday travel period, which began at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22 and ended at 11;59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26. This year's number is a bump from the 11 motorists who died during the same travel period in 2016.

Across the state, troopers investigated 55 traffic crashes that resulted in 219 injuries and 10 deaths. In addition to those investigations, troopers arrested 192 motorists for driving under the influence and issued 7,323 citations and 12,313 warnings to drivers.

Locally, Gwinnett County police, Richmond County sheriff's deputies, Floyd County police, Cherokee County deputies and Albany police were agencies reporting traffic deaths during the 102-hour holiday period.
