Know Before You Go: Employee Handles Raw Chicken Without Washing Hands

AJ's Cafe improved its score to 84, or B, while Whistle Stop Express in Cartersville pulled its failing grade up to 71, or C.

The Bartow County Environmental Health Department visited the following establishments to conduct food service scores April 29-May 6: 

ACWORTH FISH CAMP (Food Service Inspections)*

May 1, 2015 Score: 86, Grade: B

  • Observed can opener dirty with dried food debris. Needs to be wash, rinsed and sanitized.
  • Observed multiple employee drinks stored on tabletops in twist cap drinks. Went over proper employee drinks and storage. Corrective action: drinks discarded.
  • Observed chili and rice not being cooled properly. Food placed in coolers in deep containers and at high temperatures with lids. Went over cooling techniques. Corrective action: items pulled to be cooled properly.
  • Observed broken cutting board.
  • Observed standing water in bottom of prep coolers. Observed dirty gaskets with dried food debris.
  • Observed dirty floors throughout facility.

  • Ice scoop in bar observed with handle stored down in the ice. Scoop removed.
  • Teriyaki needing refrigeration observed sitting out at room temp. in front cook area. Employee threw away teriyaki.
  • Observed expired coke product in bar area. Told employees to watch dates and discard old product.
  • Expired caramel in dry storage. Product discarded.

  • Observed employee not washing hands after handling raw chicken. Discussed proper glove usage and hand washing procedures.
  • Observed employee picking up ready to eat bacon with bare hand to plate. Discussed using gloves and/or tongs.
  • Again, observed food in prep cooler and walk in cooler without proper coverage. When food is stored it needs to be covered for protection.
  • Again, observed food not being held at 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below. See temperatures listed below. CA: Discard food. Again, discussed correct placement of food in prep cooler.
  • Again, observed food at room temperature without a time or temperature control. CA: Discussed with the PIC about time/temp control.
  • Observed a container of raw chicken placed in/on a trash can while being prepped. CA: Discussed using proper prep table.
